Short answer: Claude and ChatGPT can't post to social media on their own. They can write the post. To publish it they need a tool connected that can: an MCP server from a social media scheduler, an automation platform like Zapier or n8n, or a platform's own API. You add one as a connector, sign in, and from then on the agent can schedule posts, publish them and check what's queued.
Below is every route that works today, what each one costs, and where each one falls down. I build one of these tools, seenpaid, so read with that in mind. Everything about the other products was read off their own pages on 23 September 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish a number, I say so rather than guess.
Can ChatGPT post to social media?
Not on its own. ChatGPT has no login for your X, LinkedIn or Instagram accounts. It can publish once you add a scheduler from its plugin directory (seenpaid has been listed there since 24 September 2026) or connect an MCP server in developer mode on a paid plan.
Can Claude post to social media?
Not on its own either. Claude can publish once you add a scheduler's MCP server as a custom connector in claude.ai or Claude Desktop (every plan, one connector on Free), or with one `claude mcp add` command in Claude Code.
- ChatGPT: plugin directory, or developer mode (paid plans). No key to paste.
- Claude (claude.ai / Desktop): custom connector on every plan; Free allows one at a time.
- Claude Code: one command with an API key.
- Cursor, Codex, Windsurf and other MCP clients: the same server URL.
Last verified: 24 September 2026.
How to schedule social media posts with MCP
- 1. Pick a scheduler that has an MCP server and connect your social accounts in its dashboard (the OAuth step needs you in a browser once).
- 2. Add the server to your AI client: a custom connector in Claude or ChatGPT, or one `claude mcp add --transport http …` command in Claude Code.
- 3. Ask the agent to list your connected accounts, so it only promises platforms that are really there.
- 4. Have it check the caption against each platform's limits before scheduling (in seenpaid that tool is validate_post).
- 5. Schedule with the platforms and an exact time with time zone named explicitly, then ask it to read back what is queued.
The problem, in people's own words
A Hacker News post from 31 March put the whole problem in two sentences: "I can draft a perfect LinkedIn post in 3 seconds. I cannot click Post." (tonythompson)
In r/ClaudeCowork, someone making carousels with Claude asked whether they could post straight from it, because otherwise "I have to manually export the images and go upload them to each social channel yada yada yada." (JDfor3). The replies recommended eight different things: Nuelink, Postiz (hosted and self-hosted), Blotato twice, Planoly twice, and SocialBee with copy-paste. Nobody agreed, which is roughly the state of the market.
One more thing worth knowing. The most visible Reddit thread asking "how to post to social media from Claude?" was posted by the co-founder of a scheduler, who then answered it himself with his own product. Plenty of pages about this topic work the same way, this one included. That's why every price below comes with its source, listed at the end.
The four routes
- A scheduler's MCP server. The agent gets tools like "list my accounts", "schedule this post" and "what's queued". The scheduler handles the platform logins, media and retries. This is what most people want.
- An automation platform. Zapier MCP or n8n turns your existing workflows into tools the agent can call. Good if you already have Zaps. Weaker as a posting tool, because there's no shared queue to read back.
- The platform APIs directly. Free or cheap for some platforms, a developer project for others. Worth it for one platform, painful for five.
- Copy and paste. Still the default, and the thing everyone above is trying to escape.
| Route | How the agent posts | Cost (checked 23–24 Sep 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduler MCP server | Calls the scheduler's tools after you add it as a connector | Free (Buffer, Metricool) to $19.99–$99/mo | Most people |
| Zapier MCP or n8n | Triggers your existing workflows as tools | Your Zapier or n8n plan | Posting already built in automations |
| Platform APIs | Code the agent writes against each API | X $0.015/post ($0.20 with a link); Bluesky free; LinkedIn free after app approval | One platform, and you're a developer |
| Copy and paste | You do it | Free | The occasional post |
Route 1: a scheduler's MCP server
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is how Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and most agents plug into outside tools. A scheduler with an MCP server gives the agent a set of callable functions, and the agent decides when to call them. You add the server once and log in with the scheduler account.
What exists today, with numbers from each vendor's own page:
- Buffer: MCP launched 27 May 2026 and is on every plan, including Free. Free is capped at 3 channels, paid is $5 per channel per month (Essentials). Buffer doesn't publish a tool count; its docs list around 20 functions. 11 social platforms plus Start Page.
- Metricool: MCP on every plan, including Free. The strongest option if the agent's job is reading analytics rather than posting. No tool count on its own pages.
- Postiz: open source (AGPL-3.0) and free to self-host, or $29/month hosted (5 channels, 7-day trial). Ships a hosted MCP server and an open-source agent CLI. If you want to own the whole stack, this is the one.
- Blotato: 36 tools, 9 platforms, from $29/month. The 7-day trial covers "all features - except the API", so budget for paying before you can really test the agent side.
- Post Bridge: 16 tools, 10 platforms, from $29/month, and its agents page says MCP is on the entry plan.
- Typefully: an official MCP server for X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon, signed in with OAuth. I couldn't read its current prices off its own pricing page, so I'm not quoting any.
- Hootsuite: MCP connectors arrived with its 24 June 2026 relaunch. Plans start at $99/month; Hootsuite doesn't say which plans include MCP.
- seenpaid (mine): 50 tools, 21 platforms, from $19.99/month. No free tier; the 7-day trial needs a card. It's the only one here that can tell the agent which posts made money, if you connect your own Stripe.
For a deeper comparison of the servers themselves, including what makes a tool list good rather than just long, see the MCP server comparison linked at the end.
How to connect one in Claude
In claude.ai or Claude Desktop: Customize, then Connectors, then the plus button, then "Add custom connector". Paste the server URL, add it, and sign in when asked. Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, but the Free plan is limited to one at a time. On Team and Enterprise an owner adds the connector for the organisation first.
In Claude Code it's one command. For seenpaid it looks like this, with a key from Settings → API:
claude mcp add --transport http seenpaid https://api.seenpaid.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer $SEENPAID_API_KEY"
Any other scheduler works the same way: swap in its name, URL and key.
How to connect one in ChatGPT
ChatGPT has no built-in way to post to social media. If a scheduler is listed in ChatGPT's plugin directory, that's the easy route: find it there, add it, sign in. (seenpaid was approved there on 24 September.) For anything not listed, custom MCP connectors live behind Developer Mode: Settings, Connectors, Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode, then add a custom connector with the server's URL and sign in. OpenAI lists Developer Mode for Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise and Edu. The free plan can't do it.
Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, Grok and most other clients take the same URL. There's a step-by-step page for each of them in the links at the end.
Route 2: Zapier or n8n
Zapier MCP exposes Zapier's actions (30,000+ across 9,000+ apps, by its own count) as tools an agent can call, and that includes posting actions for the big networks. n8n has an MCP Client Tool node that lets an n8n AI agent call any MCP server, plus ordinary nodes for each platform.
Pick this if your posting already runs through Zaps or n8n workflows and you only want the agent to trigger them. The catch is that each action is a separate tool with no shared idea of "my queue", so the agent can fire a post but can't easily answer "what's going out tomorrow?" or move a post it scheduled last week.
Route 3: the platform APIs
- X: pay-per-use. $0.015 per post, or $0.20 if the post contains a link, per X's own pricing page. You need a developer account and your own keys whichever route you take.
- Bluesky: free. Make an app password in settings, open a session, create a post record. The easiest API of the lot, and a fine first test for an agent that writes its own code.
- LinkedIn: free, but you need a developer app tied to a company page, the "Share on LinkedIn" product approved, and a version header that LinkedIn retires every so often. (It broke for us once when a version was sunset.)
Going direct makes sense for one platform and a developer who enjoys this. Past two or three platforms you're rebuilding a scheduler: token refresh, media upload rules, rate limits, retries.
Before you let any agent post for you
Whichever route you pick, the failures look the same. These are the rules I give every agent that touches my accounts, each one written after watching an agent get it wrong:
- Make it list the connected accounts first. An agent will happily promise a platform that isn't connected.
- Name the platforms on every call. With some tools, leaving them out means "post everywhere".
- Always give a schedule time with a time zone, unless you really mean now.
- Check the caption against each platform's limits before scheduling, not after it fails.
- Confirm before anything public. In Claude Code you can put the publishing tools on "ask" in the permissions settings so it has to stop and check with you.
- Make it read back what's queued instead of saying "done".
Which route to pick
- You want it free → Buffer (3 channels) or Metricool.
- You want to self-host and own everything → Postiz.
- Your posting already lives in Zaps or n8n → Zapier MCP or n8n's MCP node.
- You only post to Bluesky → the API is free and easy.
- You want the agent to see which posts made money → seenpaid.
The honest limits of mine
Since I'm a vendor on this list: seenpaid has no free tier, and the trial asks for a card. X is bring-your-own-key, so you pay X for posting either way. TikTok videos land in your drafts and you publish them in the app. New users can't connect Instagram or Facebook yet, because Meta's review isn't done. If any of those are dealbreakers, one of the others above is the better pick.
